The Last Few Days

So I celebrate Chinese New Year. Not only because I am Chinese, but because the lunar New Year is way more legitimate than January 1st. So I stayed home, got some awesome (orange looking because my white balance is off) food from the family!

We had duck! I love duck.

Lots of fish on veggies.

The other day I enjoyed being a mall rat. Just wandering around and probably not buying anything. I went to Pinkberry for the first time, which was terrific! There’re only two locations open in BC, one in Metrotown mall and the other in Park Royal Mall. I know Pinkberry is huge in the states, so I wanted to try it out and see if Yogen Fruz is going to go out of business…

…They probably are.

Blueberries, Kiwi, Blood Orange popping things, Wafers, and Blood Orange Frozen Yogurt
It was delicious! Firstly, there’s a guy standing outside the store handing out samples. Not wimpy samples. I went for 3 samples myself (but justified because at least I bought something, right?).

Look at the little melting chocolate sample. So cute.
It isn’t exactly cheap… 4 toppings and a base yogurt cost over $6, but I enjoyed it very much. The fruit didn’t taste frozen, at least.

And there’s always Greek OPA! to try! Can’t go wrong with Souvlaki.

January Glymm Box!

1 week and a day after the initial expected delivery date, this lovely package was waiting for me at my front door!

Again, I got pretty much what everyone else got… the only difference was that my eyeliner was in ‘Wood’ (a taupey brown).

Yay for:

Cargo Eyeliner in Wood                                                                            Full Size 2g

I like this! I would have liked black, since I am running low on black eyeliner, but this is a very nice neutral colour. It is creamy, but not the creamiest formula I have tried. I haven’t tried Cargo before and I’m digging this so far.

Anastasia Eyebrow Gel                                                                              2.5ml

I have always used the Maybelline clear mascara as my brow gel, but this is fantastic too. It is a bit expensive for the full size, I’d probably stick with my $4 Maybelline one. However, I will say the formula of this is very effective and helps my brows stay in place slightly better than Maybelline.

Burt’s Bees Nourishing Milk and Honey Body Lotion                7ml X 2

Some people complained that their lotion smelled funny… not sure if they got a bad batch or what, because I’ve actually tried the full size of this before (and I’m very happy to get more) and it smells very nice to me. So not sure what happened with other people’s boxes, but I enjoyed mine very much. In fact I squeezed out the two little sample packets into a preexisting Burt’s Bees container!

Meh for:

Kaia Naturals Juicy Bamboo Facial Cleaning Cloths                 1 Sheet

I’ve gotten this exact thing in a Loosebutton Luxebox a few months back (before I cancelled my subscription with them), but from Luxebox I actually got 2 sheets instead of just one. I think this is a great sample, but really not enough of a sample to determine whether this product is for me. If you can’t get more than one use out of it, how can you be sure you won’t have a reaction/won’t like it?

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator                    12g

I’m not a fan of glows/brightness/luminosity/sheens. I have naturally ‘luminous’ skin, so I don’t need any help there. I like this as an exfoliator, and it does a great job. But this product isn’t for me. Good sized sample too!

Bonus: Free RMS Lip Shine with $25 purchase.

I will mention that I purchased the Kaia Facial Cleansing Cloths (pack of 30), and a bar soap from the Glymm website. I used my Glymm points and my $10 off coupon from December’s box… and in total I paid $3 or so for taxes and that was it! So hopefully that’ll arrive soon in the mail. Very excited about Glymm’s point system and the little promos they have for their online store. It was one of the main reasons I switched from Luxebox to Glymm.

I didn’t hate anything about my box this month. All positive or neutral feelings!

I noticed a lot of people on their Facebook page that had some major complaints… I’ve never been a complainer in my life (working in customer care for over 3 years will desensitize you to anything) so it was hard to read all the negative comments about Glymm this month.

Mainly the issue was that the free RMS lip shine with $25 purchase ran out. So not everyone could get one. Glymm restocked their shelves 2 days after they ran out of stock… in that time people had flooded their Facebook wall with negative comments. It isn’t possible for a store to have unlimited stock. I agree that Glymm shouldn’t have sent out promo cards to every subscriber if they didn’t have enough stock to accommodate those orders… but to the company’s credit: no company foresees every one of their clients ordering that month for the same product. I bet most subscribers don’t order from the site regularly… and many people still won’t order it for the lip shine. It is nearly impossible to predict the number of people ordering. The point is… Glymm restocked. They have the darn lip shines. Get them if you want them and stop complaining!

The Last Few Days

I haven’t been posting much, partly because I have a bit of a cold (finally, after years of consecutive healthy living… I’ve succumbed to germs!). Also, it’s been snowing! Vancouver is having one of its coldest winters in its past decades and many people aren’t dealing with it very well

Freezing rain and sunny days does provide some beautiful sunsets though, oh man.

I’ve also painted my nails about a billion times since I’ve last even had my nails in a picture… but I’m quite pleased with these reverse French manicures…

A good way to spend a cold winter day is inside with the DVD player on. Watching the first season of Community, I realize now what I’ve been missing. This is an incredible clever and witty show. It is so alarmingly meta that I wonder if that is why so many people hate this show. Like most comedies, it’s either love or hate. The paintball episode is a must-see!

The same view from my kitchen window, with some snow everywhere. It hasn’t melted at all over the last week!

It was also my Mother’s birthday, so we picked up some of her favourite colour of roses from the store and took her out for supper.

Pet Peeve of the Day

Shark Fin Soup!

I’ve had shark fin soup before, and more than just once. My first few times I was far too young to even know what I was drinking/eating. Recently I had it at a wedding.

The qualms I have with shark fin soup is that it doesn’t taste like anything. The soup broth is delicious. The broth doesn’t absorb into the fin itself, so the shark fin doesn’t actually have any taste.

The consistency/texture of shark fin itself is ridiculous. It is literally the texture of noodles. Like tasteless, bland, rice noodles.

People pay ridiculous amounts of money for an ingredient that has no taste. I recently saw a video of Gordon Ramsey trying shark fin soup for the first time and I entirely agree with his sentiment that you can justify eating it/the cost if it were the most amazing taste ever. But it isn’t.

Not to mention the horrendous animal cruelty involved with getting this dish.

Rare or nearly extinct species of sharks have their fins cut off before they reach reproduction age and are tossed back into the water. Thousands of shark fins are laid out to dry on rooftops and sold at exorbitant prices to restaurants all over the world.

And I will admit that it is mainly Asian countries that value this dish so much. They consider it a delicacy. More than anything, buying shark fin soup for a wedding or larger group proves that:

1)   You are rich and can afford such luxury
2)   You have ‘sophisticated’ tastes
3)   Money is no problem when it comes to pleasing your guests

I’ve known for a long time about the cruelty and irrationality of having shark fin soup, but people still order it. Restaurants would be hard-pressed to take it off their menus since it’s in such high demand… but after trying it, I would be entirely flummoxed if someone told me they loved it.

What do they love? It has no taste. It has the texture of $1 noodles from a 7-11. So that can’t be it. It must be some other immeasurable thing I haven’t thought of.

Stop having shark fin soup! Sharks for the win!

Pet Peeve of the Day

Rigid return policies!

Mainly this refers to larger chain-stores. I understand that little boutiques and family-run businesses have their own rules and regulations, but for giant 100+ location megastores? You can afford to take a hit from my $19.99 necklace that I’d like to return.

Firstly, I am appalled that some companies will even argue with me about whether or not they ‘should be’ accepting my item for a return/exchange/store credit. It doesn’t look very reputable nor show very good customer service if I see you pointing your finger and shaking your head.

I’d like to think that as a Manager/Owner/big boss person, that you could be flexible/bend the rules/have SOME type of power. But they always make it seem as though they are victims themselves to their system. If you hate it so much yourself, change it.

I don’t ask for much either. I have never asked for my money back. I’m happy to get a store credit or even an exchange. But it’s those circumstances where something is clearly faulty and they refuse to do anything about it.

Example #1:
I got my mother a necklace from Winners. Checked it out at the store, looked great. When she opened it, it looked great. Wore it the first time, and the chain broke. It wasn’t fixable (I’ve made jewelry before, I can fix pretty simple things) because the chain is very tiny and he loops are almost impossible to even see (let alone fix back together).
So we truck on back to Winners to hopefully get an exchange. Of course they didn’t have an exact duplicate of the one I picked out, so we showed the lady. She was actually very nice, she told me she had to call the manager to approve an exchange/return/store credit/anything of actual efficiency. The manager tells us that they wouldn’t have sold a necklace in a broken state so we ‘must’ve broken it’ ourselves. Yep.
Why, in anyone’s understanding of reality, would someone buy a product to purposefully break. Yes, I get there are psychos out there trying to screw over stores and get the most out of their returns… but my mother was there, she looked distraught over her broken gift, and I, for one, am not in the mindset of breaking things on purpose that I intend on gifting.
After several minutes of painfully explaining this, the manager finally agreed (with a sigh too heavy in my opinion) on giving us store credit. She told us this was an exception to their rules and they shouldn’t even be doing this. Oh yeah, if you need to say that, then don’t even do it. Don’t guilt me about helping me out… as if you’re doing me the biggest favour in the world. You’re not taking the hit on this, Winners is.
I am never that angry. But that's what my brain looks like...
Example #2:
My friend got me a sweater from Forever21 for Christmas. Firstly, I know Forever21 has an awful reputation when it comes to their returns. Basically if it doesn’t have a tag, you don’t get ANYTHING. No returns, no exchanges, no store credit. Not even if the merchandise is faulty.
So I try on this sweater, and it fits too small. It has a tag, but my friend has scribbled over the barcode/price/everything BUT the part that says ‘Forever21’. Now, isn’t this normal? When you gift something, you don’t want the recipient to know how much you paid for something.
Regardless, I try my luck. I bring it into my local Forever21 and the girl at the cash register looks at the tag mystified before saying ‘we cannot scan this to prove this is ours. And we need a receipt.’ I dunno about you… but I’ve been to a few places where their laser scanning magic devices can scan anything despite having a layer of sharpie over it. Whatever. It still has the tag, so I ask if I can get a store credit. The girl has to ask a manager. The manager looks harassed far before she gets near me. I don’t know what it is about managers that have a sense of entitlement and dissatisfaction… but if you look that unhappy working there, maybe you should leave.
The manager can discern the numbers on the tag and manually types them in, and informs me that since the item is now on sale, they cannot do returns/exchanges/anything for final sale items. And she repeats what the other girl says about the receipt. I ask if it was on sale when my friend bought it for me, and if that is the case, how on earth is it fair that nothing can be done at this point. And how the hell am I supposed to have the receipt if I didn’t buy it!
She shrugs. No one in a position of power, and ability to do something, should ever shrug.
Shrugging tells me ‘I don’t care.’ Shrugging says ‘not my problem.’ Except, miss I’m-too-good-to-be-working-here, it is your problem. This is exactly what your job is. To deal with issues such as these. She tells me that my friend should’ve given me a gift receipt. As if it’s my friend’s fault that I didn’t get a receipt.
I know after Christmas season everyone is going nuts about returns and complaints… and it’s busy and you’re stressed…
But my item is entirely resellable, I mention that I would take the store credit at the final sale price, but no can do. No exceptions. Even with the tags, she is already walking away.
Guess this is getting regifted to someone smaller than me.

I know lots of stores like this, but the part that bothers me is that people in power positions don’t seem to put any emphasis on customer retention at all. I would be a lot less miffed about poor policy if their customer service was better.

Sigh.
